A super quickie 'tutorial' with an example of the sort of pattern I create for plush heads and how I needlesculpt the features.
I can't stress enough that needlesculpting can be done lots of different ways. Even using this diagram you can achieve different looks by changing the spacing of the stitches and how snugly you pull.
As an example... The prototype plush is stuffed pretty firmly and the fabric gave a little under the stress of the sculpting stitches. So I had to ease the stitches a bit to find a balance. Other fabrics I've been able to pull hard and the fabric can handle it (good quality fleece, for instance, doesn't require such hard stuffing and can handle taut stitches).
Needlesculpting (also called needle modeling) is using a long needle and strong thread to sort of pull a stuffed form into a certain shape rather than creating it from a complex pattern. In this case I'm using it to define the eye and mouth areas of a plush which is pretty simple. More complex needle sculpting can be used to define noses and wrinkles as well. Extremely complex needle sculpting, usually over an armature, can be used to create very realistic detail (as shown in the amazing work of cloth sculptor, Lisa Lichtenfels).

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

So it's a very versatile technique! ^_^
